Stockholm Arlanda – Scandinavia's fastest growing airport

Stockholm Arlanda claims to be the fastest growing airport in the Nordic countries – based on a 20% rise in traffic over the last two years.

The Swedish gateway handled a record 19.1 million passengers in 2011, and the upward trend continued in the first quarter of this year with an 8% upturn in traffic.

In response to the upturn in demand and projected future growth, operator Swedavia launched a €110 million investment programme at the end of 2011 to raise the airport's capacity and enhance customer service.

For the first time ever, the number of foreign visitors exceeded three million at Stockholm Arlanda Airport in 2011.

Indeed, foreign visitors accounted for 83% of the one million increase in passengers flying internationally from Sweden's airports.

The largest increase in the number of visitors comes from Norway and Britain.

Among smaller groups of visitors, Poland (+45%) and Iceland (+84%) recorded the biggest increase in passengers.

"The large increase in visitors shows how much Sweden continues to grow as a country to visit and as an international business partner," says Swedavia's chief commercial and marketing officer, Michael Persson Gripkow.

"Sweden has remained relatively stable through the past year's economic turmoil in Europe which makes it a favourable market for airlines to invest in."

Passenger growth in the Nordic capital airports – Q1 2012

Stockholm Arlanda Airport: 8%
Copenhagen Airport: 7%
Oslo Airport: 7%
Helsinki Airport: 6%
