Distinctive white cabs will soon be a common sight in Bangalore after the city's airport launched a fleet of 2,000 taxis – a first for an Indian airport.

Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) said the new “airport taxis” would be fitted with “state-of-the-art vehicle technology” – including GPS, digital meters and payment machines – and will be driven by multi-lingual drivers.

About 1,400 of the cars were introduced today (June 14) with another 600 hitting the roads by the end of the year.

The introduction has created more than 2,500 jobs for drivers and administration staff.

Passengers can book cabs by telephone, internet or a dedicated mobile application.

Rene Baumann, vice president, commercial, for BIAL, said: “The journey begins from home and each transport used creates the overall travel experience.

“We are delighted to offer this huge fleet and mark a significant change in the transport experience of the city.”
