Charlotte Douglas International Airport is set to go ahead with a $35-million plan to buy land south of its newest runway, according to reports.

The airport’s advisory committee gave the proposals to buy homes close to the airport the green light this week.

The committee voted unanimously to endorse the plan to buy a total of 470 acres.

Up to 75 percent of the $35 million expenditure would be eligible to federal reimbursement, the Charlotte Observer reported.

Homeowners affected by airport noise will be approached to sell their property voluntarily.

The land will be added to the airport’s existing 6,000 acres and will be used for facilities to support a new rail yard.
