Over 150 fire fighters, police, paramedics and other airport staff took part in a full emergency rescue exercise at Tirana International Airport yesterday to test the Albanian gateway's ability to react to an aircraft crash.

The exercise, organised in collaboration with Albania’s civil emergency services and based on the mock crash of a turboprop aircraft, was hailed a great success by airport CEO, Andrea Gebbeken.

“Being able to respond quickly, effectively and smoothly to any possible emergency that could arise at the airport is our major responsibility. By undertaking such an exercise, TIA  enables all the parties involved to be prepared and react better to such an emergency or incident," says Gebbeken.

"The safety of our passengers and staff is our first priority and such, exercises help to maintain and where needed, improve the procedures the airport already has in place."

Various state entities involved in the emergency test included the Directorate of Civil Emergencies and the Ministry of Interior (with its airport police task force). The Red Cross were also involved.

Like other gateways, Tirana International Airport is required to perform such an exercise at least once every two years to demonstrate that is equipped to handle an aircraft emergency.
