Although total traffic at the airport increased 7.5% compared with the same month a year ago, passenger numbers travelling to Tokyo fell 9.6% following the Japanese earthquake and subsequent nuclear disaster.

However, aircraft movement at Changi jumped 13% over the month to 24,000 thanks to the continued growth of low cost carriers (LCC).

LCC passenger traffic increased 22.8% in March and so far this year has accounted for a quarter (24%) of all traffic at Changi.

According to the gateway, March was also Changi’s busiest month in three years for cargo, with airfreight movements increasing 5.6% to 166,100 tonnes.

Meanwhile, in the first quarter of 2011, Changi airport registered 10.9 million passenger movements – up 9.5% on last year – as well as 70,400 aircraft movements – an increase of 12.3% compared with the same period in 2010.

Airfreight movements at the airport also jumped 2.9% in the first three months of 2011 compared with the same period a year ago.
