Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport has marked the topping out of its new train station.

On Friday (29 April), employees in Phoenix signed one of the 35,000 pound elliptical beams on the future PHX Sky Train station at 44th Street and Washington and, in keeping with tradition, also placed a small evergreen tree and a US flag at the top of the structure.

Stage One of the PHX Sky Train is expected to be completed in early 2013 and will transport passengers between the regional METRO light rail system at 44th Street and Washington, and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport’s East Economy Parking and Terminal 4.

Tamie Fisher, assistant aviation director for the City of Phoenix, said: “The 44th Street and Washington station will serve as a new gateway to the Phoenix Airport, allowing for passenger drop-off and pick-up and providing a seamless connection to public transportation.”

The station will feature an arched roof to allow for generous amounts of natural light inside the building. The steel elliptical framework is now in place and the roofing of the main structure is in its beginning stages.

Stage Two of the PHX Sky Train, which will be completed in 2020, will see the train link continue from Terminal 4 through the airport to the rental car centre.
