Romanian investment company Infra–Group is inviting architects to register an interest in designing the planned new international airport just south of Bucharest.

The new ‘Bucharest South’ Airport will be the first private Romanian international gateway and the first airport built in the country for 20 years.

A statement from the group said: “Such an investment will contribute to the economic balance of Bucharest in relation to North-South, bringing new development perspectives for the southern metropolitan area.”

The new gateway will be built on more than 255 hectares of land, 20 km south of Bucharest in Adunatii Copaceni.

According to Gheorghe Racaru, group strategy & corporate planning manager of the Infra–Group, the airport shall be designed to host generally aircrafts of type C – intended for short and average distance flights within the space of Europe, the Asiatic neighbouring countries and the Middle East.

These are generally Airbus A320 and Boeing B737 aircrafts with a capacity of between 120 and 180 passengers.

The airport will be fully equipped for passenger and luggage transportation as well as for aircraft maintenance services.

After the prequalification process, the selected applicants will be invited to tender for the contract which will ultimately be the entire design of the international airport – including a master plan, feasibility study, and appropriate permits and technical specifications for building.

Entries for the prequalification process must be completed by 19 August.
