Buenos Aires Ezeiza Airport opens new $150m terminal

Argentina’s Ezeiza International Airport has officially opened its new $150 million Terminal C.

Argentina’s Ezeiza International Airport has officially opened its new $150 million Terminal C.

The new 21,000sqm terminal has been designed to expand capacity at the gateway, and has eight new boarding bridges, 2,500 parking spaces, as well as twelve border control stations and additional baggage screening areas.

In addition, the airport operator, Aeropuertos Argentina 2000 (AA2200) said it hoped that the new complex will eventually boast a direct rail link to downtown Buenos Aires.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Argentinian President, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, claimed that her country had a “wonderful new facility”.

She added: “I believe that it is a facility that Argentines and our international visitors will enjoy. It is an impressive building that will also help the airport cope with future demand.

“I believe that the harmonisation of the roles played by both the public and the private sector in this project and others throughout the country have been the pillar for the growth that Argentina has been experiencing since 2003.”

Terminal C will also be joined by a new 4-star hotel in late 2012/early 2013, with a $30 million joint-venture between AA2000 and Grupo Fernández Prieto y Asociados.

Ernesto Gutierrez, CEO of AA2000, said that the construction of the hotel has long been a priority as the gateway now handles 5mppa and transfer traffic is growing.

According to the operator, the new space will be used exclusively by the national airline of Argentina, Aerolineas Argentinas.

Construction of the new terminal took 19 months and it has been named after the singer Mercedes Sosa, who died in 2009.

AA2000 said that the construction of the terminal is part of a series of works to expand and modernize the airport which is expected to handle 13mppa by the end of 2013.
