The number of passengers handled by Vienna Airport during the first month of 2012 increased 9% compared with January last year, to hit nearly 1.4 million.
 

However, despite the surge in passenger numbers, flight movements at the gateway decreased 2.7% over the month and cargo declined 10.1% in the same period when compared with a year earlier.
 

On the other hand, according to Vienna, the number of transfer passengers at the gateway increased 19.4% when compared with January 2011.
 

Passenger traffic to Eastern Europe was 26.1% higher than the comparable period in 2011, while the number of passengers travelling to Western Europe and the Middle East rose by 6.5% and 5.8% respectively.
