Nearly 40 local and international firms have shown interest in the tender to design and build Panama's Enrique Jimenez international airport in northern Colon province, the country's civil aviation authority (AAC) has announced.

Some of the companies interested in the $60 million project include Argentinian construction firm Riva, Costa Rica's Meco, Panama's Constructora Urbana (CUSA), Spanish company FCC and Brazilian construction firm Queiroz Galvao, according to AAC.

Construction is expected to take approximately 18 months to complete. AAC launched the tender on July 23. When operational, Enrique Jimenez will be the Panama’s third international airport after Tocumen–Panama City and Enrique Malek in Chiriqui province.
