Bolivia's first tourist airport is being built in the city of Uyuni in Potosi department and will be opened by year-end, according to public works minister Walter Delgadillo.

Delgadillo says that the initial cost of the gateway will be $12 million although the price tag will rise to $22 million when the airport is later upgraded to allow it to handle international flights.

The project aims to promote tourism in the region, especially in the Uyuni salt flat, which is located some 3,665m above sea level and is visited by an average 60,000 tourists annually.

Earlier this year the Bolivian government announced plans to build a new $20 million gateway in Oruro department.
