Phoenix Sky Harbor claims that earlier today its PHX Sky Train became the first transit system in the world to cross an active taxiway.

The train, which is undergoing tests ahead its planned 2013 opening, took its first official ride on the bridge over Phoenix Sky Harbor’s taxiway 'R' while aircraft passed underneath the span.

The taxiway bridge is the first mass transit bridge in the world to be constructed over an active airport taxiway, according to the Arizona gateway.

It is more than 100 feet tall and large enough for a Boeing 747 to pass below.

Construction on Stage One of the PHX Sky Train project is nearly complete.

The automated, electrically-powered train, will transport passengers between the METRO light rail, East Economy Parking and Terminal 4, Sky Harbor’s busiest, beginning in the first quarter of 2013.

In the next stage, open by early 2015, travellers will be able to take the PHX Sky Train to all of Sky Harbor’s terminals.
