Bogota–El Dorado International Airport’s new ‘showpiece’ international terminal has opened for business.
The $600 million complex is expected to handle around 300,000 passengers per month until 2014, when the opening of two new ‘domestic’ concourses will create one huge 1.9 million sq ft terminal capable of accommodating all visitors.
The complex is one of the biggest airport projects undertaken in Latin America in recent times.
Designed by Zyscovich Architects, when complete the terminal boasts 64 check-in counters, 45 immigration lanes, restaurants and duty-free shops, and a ‘high tech’ baggage claim area.
The design also incorporates natural light and ventilation to maximise energy efficiency, and a rain collection system for irrigation and toilets.
