Auckland Airport moves ahead in terminal upgrade

Auckland Airport is now improving the interior of its domestic terminal as it enters a new phase in a NZ$29m ($23m) overhaul of the terminal.

The terminal building is being altered to cut congestion and cater for rising numbers of large planes, said Peter Alexander, the gateway’s acting general manager, airport development and delivery.

Passengers will benefit from improved gate access, baggage collection and toilets, as well as faster security screening, a new regional lounge and two new air-bridges, he said.

"The upgrade will be completed by June 2014,” he said.

“It will also ensure that we can efficiently and effectively process passengers while a long-term solution is worked on for the domestic terminal."

Earlier this year, Auckland Airport completed improvements to the terminal’s forecourt area, changing traffic flows and putting canopies over public drop-off areas.

The new phase in the upgrade will focus on the domestic terminal’s interior, said Alexander.

“We will be working hard to ensure that while the upgrade is being undertaken there is minimal disruption to the travelling public," he said.
