Dubai achieves record passenger traffic

Traffic at Dubai International increased by 23.8% in August to reach 5,999,375 passengers – representing the busiest month in the airport’s history.

According to a traffic report issued by operator, Dubai Airports, August was the ninth consecutive month that traffic surpassed five million passengers.

Year-to-date figures have increased 16.4% from 37,784,946 to 43,971,839.

Aircraft movements grew 11.5% to 31,198 during August, while year-to-date, the figure increased 7.3% to 242,571.

Cargo volumes for the year so far increased by 8.1% to reach 1,588,716 tonnes – although August saw a 3% year-on-year drop from 190,770 to 184,877 tonnes.

Paul Griffiths, Dubai Airports’ CEO, said the results were “very satisfying” and remarked how close the airport was to handling six million passengers a month.

He added: “The signs are good for the remainder of the year, the highlight of which will be the launch of passenger operations at Al Maktoum International at Dubai World Central [DWC].

“We have signed MoUs with two airlines and are in discussion with a number of other carriers to start services at the new airport while Wizz Air has confirmed it will start operations on October 27 as DWC’s launch customer.”
