From January to September, transit traffic increased 8.6%.
In the same period, the airport handled 11.7m passengers in total – up 2.5% on the same period in 2012.
Joni Sundelin, senior vice president of operator Finavia’s airport network, marketing and sales, commented: “International transit traffic has grown steadily throughout the year and the rate of growth has accelerated towards the year’s end.
“We can be very happy with this trend, because it shows that Helsinki Airport is an important and attractive air transport hub between Europe and Asia.”
Due to the strong growth in transit traffic and the expected surge in total passenger volumes later this year, Sundelin anticipates total traffic for the year to reach 2012 levels.
Finavia’s airport portfolio saw 14.4m passengers in the first nine months of the year, representing a 1.8% drop on the same period in 2012.
After an initial decline in the first quarter, passenger traffic rose 3.3% in the third quarter.
