Hamad International to open in January

The long-awaited New Doha International Airport (NDIA), also known as Hamad International, in Qatar, is set to undergo a ‘soft’ opening at the start of 2014.

Transport Minister, Jassim Seif Ahmed al-Sulaiti, told reporters that flights would be operated on a trial basis from January, according to Gulf Times.

Speaking at the inauguration of Qatar’s International Transport and Logistics Industry Exhibition, al-Sulaiti said that cargo operations at NDIA could commence as soon as December 1.

He told journalists: “After that, other halls will be opened in a phased manner.”

Initially, 10 carriers are due to operate out of NDIA’s Concourse B.

The airport was first scheduled to open on December 12, 2012, but was delayed until April 1 this year.

A further delay occurred due to “new safety and security requirements”.

Once open, NDIA will be capable of handling 28 million passengers a year, rising to 50 million after 2015.
