Colm McLoughlin, executive vice chairman, said: “This is a major milestone for the operation and we want our customers to celebrate along with us and to thank them for supporting us for the past three decades.
“Also on the anniversary day, we have identified and sourced seven different products which we will sell at 1983 prices.”
The Dubai Duty Free team is hoping to surpass last year’s anniversary day, when sales reached $21 million.
To ensure a “party-like atmosphere” throughout the day, plans are in plact to conduct a Millennium Millionaire, a Finest Surprise Luxury Car draw, and the final ‘Shop and Win’ draw – where one lucky customer per day has won a 30g gold coin for the 30 days leading up to the anniversary.
When Dubai Duty Free opened on December 20, 1983, it had 100 employees – 44 of whom are still in service and referred to as ‘pioneers’.
Now, the company employs more than 6,000 staff, comprising 51 different nationalities.
After achieving $20 million sales in its first year of operation, Dubai Duty Free is expecting to end this year on $1.8 billion.
