Traffic surge at European airports

European airports have reported strong surges in passenger traffic numbers for April compared with the same month in 2013.

Edinburgh Airport says Easter getaways contributed to the 4.9% rise with 842,372 people traveling through.

Domestic travel saw an increase of 5.5% with 388,160 passengers and international traveller numbers also enjoyed an increase of 4.5% with 454,212 people travelling through in April.

Neighbouring Scotland gateway Glasgow Airport, also saw a surge of 4.9% in traffic for the month compared with last year.

More than 576,300 used Scotland's second busiest airport, with domestic traffic up 2.4% and international soaring by 7.9% for the month.

Birmingham Airport also recorded the busiest April in its history, as more than 750,000 passengers came through the gates in April, a huge 17.6% increase compared to last year.

The 758,456 figure beat the previous record for the month set in 2009 by 5.7%, and was aided by a surge in passengers flying long-haul, which were up 20.9% on April 2013.

Frankfurt Airport also saw an increase with more than 4.7 million passengers, up 0.9% using Germany‚Äôs busiest gateway.

Danish hub Copenhagen Airport has also reported a surge in passenger traffic in April, with it rising 12.8%, with more than 2.2 million using the Nordic gateway.
