ICAO to host conflict zone airspace meeting

A high-level meeting on risks to civilian aviation arising from conflict zones involving the key international aviation agencies will take place tomorrow.

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) will play host at its headquarters in Montreal, and says it has been organised in light of the downing of Malaysia Airlines aircraft flight MH17, in the Ukraine on July 17, when 298 people died.

The United Nations agency will be joined by the director generals of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), Airports Council International (ACI) and the Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation (CANSO).

ICAO says the meeting will discuss the appropriate actions to be pursued in order to more effectively mitigate potential risks to civil aviation arising from conflict zones.

Among those attending will be president of ICAO, Dr. Olumuyiwa Benard Aliu, ICAO secretary general, Raymond Benjamin, IATA director general and CEO, Tony Tyler, ACI director general, Angela Gittens, and CANSO director general, Jeff Poole.
