Munich breaks passenger traffic records

Munich Airport has handled more than 30 million passengers in the first three quarters of a calendar year for the first time in its history.

The German gateway says a major factor behind the result was strong travelller demand in the third quarter, which saw 11.4 million passengers using the airport between July and September.

This represented an all-time high for a single quarter in Munich, while in September the airport it also set a new single-month traffic record, with 3.8 million passengers.

On Friday, September 26 it was the busiest day in the airport's history, with 144,954 passengers.

The 285,000 take-offs and landings during the first three quarters of this year was 1.5% lower than the figure for the first nine months of 2013, the gateway explains, which was reflection of the fact that airlines are operating larger aircraft in Munich.

The growth in passenger figures at Munich Airport resulted from the strong gains in international traffic, and during the first nine months of the year, growth was above average in the intercontinental segment, which posted a year-on-year increase of about 7% to approximately 4.7 million passengers.

On continental routes, 18.4 million travellers took advantage of the extensive range of destinations - a 2.5% increase over the previous year, but traffic to and from domestic destinations in Germany showed a 0.6% decrease.

Total cargo handled at Munich Airport in the first nine months of this year exceeded 215,000 tonnes, or 7.1% more than in the same period a year earlier, and this topped the previous record set in 2011.
