Lisbon Airport has passed the 18 million passenger mark for the year 2014, which represents a new annual record and smashes traveller traffic recorded in 2013 by more than two million.

This feat took place place at 9.30am when flight TK 1756 to Istanbul took-off.

In order to celebrate this historical event for Lisbon Airport, the 18 millionth passenger received an upgrade on the Turkish Airlines flight, a gift form ANA Aeroportos de Portugal and a €100 gift certificate for Lojas Francas de Portugal (Portuguese duty free shop).

The number of passengers at Lisbon Airport is expected to reach 18.1 million by the end of the year, surpassing the previous record established in 2013 which was 16.025 million.

Of the 30 biggest European airports, Lisbon has the third highest growth rate of the year at 13.5%, behind Athens first at 20.9% and Brussels in second with 14.8%.

The gateway says Turkish Airlines was one of the companies, which most contributed to Lisbon’s historical results, and in 2015, the airline plans to up the number of flights from Lisbon and Porto to Istanbul, strengthening its focus on Portugal.
