Heathrow unveils largest outdoor advertising screens at a UK airport

Work has concluded on the UK’s largest outdoor airport screens at Heathrow Terminal 2.

The 11.5m by 4.8m screens weigh in at 4.8 tonnes each and were manufactured and installed by Boldman in partnership with the principal contractor responsible for project management and electrical works at the airport, AJAR-tec.

The two identical outdoor screens are the largest outdoor screens at any UK airport and are used for advertising to the 55,000 passengers that travel through the terminal each day. 

According to the suppliers, the main challenge when constructing screens of this size is maintaining quality of resolution in picture as the slightest inconsistency in flatness will cause noticeable picture distortion.

The screens were constructed out of a lightweight aluminium profile system with 180 individual panels individually mounted to the aluminium frame. 

They were then attached to the front of the terminal building façade at departure level. 

With an operating temperature range of -20 °C to + 50°C the screens are expected to have a lifespan of at least 100,000 hours.

Weight and wind tolerances needed to be calculated and tested as part of the structural installation criteria prior to design sign off. 

Nigel Clarke, CEO of Boldman explained: “It is vital that outdoor screens can withstand high winds and extreme changes of temperature and weight without an affect on structural integrity whilst maintaining image quality for advertisers. 

"Aluminium is the perfect material for this as it is lightweight, strong and allows for extreme accuracy in manufacturing"
