Portugal welcomes Humberto Delgado Airport

If Europe's newest airport, Humberto Delgado, pictured above, looks familiar, it should, as it's the new name of Lisbon Airport.

Portugal's capital city gateway, which up until yesterday was known as Lisbon Portela Airport, has been renamed in honour of a man airport operator, ANA, says "was a noteworthy figure both in 20th-century Portuguese political history and in Portuguese civil aviation".

It states: "The decision serves to acknowledge General Humberto Delgado's unique contribution not only to the fight for freedom and democracy during Estado Novo, but also to the development of modern commercial aviation in Portugal."
A ceremony was held at the airport on Sunday to mark the occasion and a special multi-media exhibition telling visitors more about Humberto Delgado and his contribution towards Portuguese aviation will remain on site for two weeks.
