Opened in October 20215, the $150 million CONRAC facility is a five-level, 1.6 million square foot complex that houses all the rental car operations, including vehicle pick up, drop off, storage, cleaning and fueling at ABIA.
More public parking is another benefit of the new Rental Car Facility and it opened up about 900 parking spaces for the traveling public.
Another parking improvement is that this building covered what was formerly part of Lot A, transforming it from an open air lot, exposed to the elements, into a new parking garage with about 800 spaces.
Eleven rental agencies, with more than 300 employees operate 3,000 vehicles per day, and can handle up to 5,000 on its busiest day.
As a single facility, the CONRAC reduces traffic on airport roadways, and is estimated to lower vehicle carbon dioxide emissions by 411.7 tons annually.
Stormwater flowing around the facility can be managed and collected to irrigate the landscape, recharge the aquifer and reduce stress on infrastructure and resources. Placards are located around the facility to explain the different techniques in energy savings and usages.
The CONRAC is a public/private partnership with the City of Austin Aviation Department and car rental companies. T
he primary team members contributing a successful certification process include the design builder Austin Commercial LP, DeMattie Wong Architecture (DWA) and the builder Pieffer Development.
LEED or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design is the recognised standard for proving that a facility has met requirements in six categories: sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, and innovation and design process.
