Traffic soars in Sochi as Basel Aero reports 16% rise in passenger traffic

Basel Aero, part of Russia’s Basic Element Group, has announced that passenger numbers across the company’s four airports increased by 16% in the first half of 2016 with the Sochi international Airport showing record-breaking growth.

A total of 3.9 million passengers passed through Sochi, Anapa, Krasnodar and Gelendzhik in the first half of the year compared to 3.4 million in the corresponding period a year ago.

The bulk of the traffic was domestic, which increased 23% to 3.7 million, compensating for a 44% decline in international traffic which dipped to just 200,000 passengers.

Air traffic movements (+5%) and cargo (+26%) were however up, freight volumes rising to 6,174 tons across the four gateways.

Sochi International Airport demonstrated record-breaking growth among Basel Aero airports, welcoming 2.1 million passengers in the first six months of 2016 – year-on-year growth of 36%.

Domestic passenger traffic in Sochi reached 2.1 million passengers in January-June 2016, 41% more year-on-year, while international traffic decreased by 40% to 50,000 visitors.

Anapa international airport served 449,157 passengers in January-June 2016, a 28%-increase year-on-year.

Krasnodar international airport, the main hub for business travelers in Southern Russia, saw an 8% fall in passenger numbers with 1,307,424 passengers handled.

Gelendzhik airport that traditionally demonstrates growth during summer tourist season, served 64,000 passengers in the first half of 2016, 12% less year-on-year.
