The duty free concession for the new terminal has been awarded to Oman Sales and Services (OSS) – a joint venture between Oman Air and Aer Rianta International Middle East.
The new terminal, which is still under construction, is expected to have an opening capacity of 12 million passengers per annum when it opens later this year or in early 2018.
The figure could soar to up to 48mppa upon completion of the four-phased construction mega-project, the timing of which will be determined by demand.
The first phase of the new 580,000 square metre terminal will boast 7,000sqm of retail space comprising of perfume & cosmetics, liquor & tobacco, confectionary, fashion & accessories departments as well as a market and several exclusive speciality stores.
“The world class duty free store concepts developed were instrumental in our winning bid," commented Philip Eckles, ARI's global implementation director.
"Since the contract award, ODG has worked diligently and professionally with our project team to turn those concepts in to reality."
ODG says that the design concept takes its inspiration from the unique Omani landscape and culture, noting that passengers will also enjoy several interactive features and experiences that will "enhance their journey in Muscat International Airport".
