Dhaka and Chittagong airports in Bangladesh are to be coached on how to effectively manage logistics and relief aid in the wake of a potential natural disaster.
DHL will conduct its ‘Get Airports Ready for Disaster’ (GARD) training in Bangladesh in June, in an effort to prepare both airports for any post-disaster logistics situation.
The GARD programme has been developed together with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). It aims to improve local logistics so that bottlenecks at the airports are avoided when high volumes of incoming relief goods arrive.
The training will cover assessing local requirements and creating detailed contingency plans.
Frank Appel, CEO of Deutsche Post DHL, says: “We've gathered enough experience in disaster relief to know that efficient airport logistics are critical when it comes to getting aid to the people who need it most.
"The GARD initiative allows us to pass on our logistics expertise to local communities in disaster-free times."
