Bahrain International Airport will see its capacity increase 50% as part of a new four-year expansion programme at the gateway.

Bahrain International Airport will see its capacity increase 50% as part of a new four-year expansion programme at the gateway.

When completed, the entire expansion project will add 40,000sqm to the airport, with five new gates, and forty new check–in counters, and will increase capacity from 9mppa to 13.5mppa.

Mumtalakat, Bahrain’s sovereign wealth fund which owns the airport, has awarded engineering consulting firm, Dar Al Handasah, $11.6m to begin the expansion project.

In an interview with Arabian Business News, Khalid Al Rumaihi, chairman of the Bahrain Airport Company (BAC), said: "The plans we are initiating for an expanded international airport are essential to Bahrain's continued development, not only in providing businesses in Bahrain with the access they demand for the future, but also in bolstering the growing aviation and logistics industry in the kingdom.”
