Frankfurt Airport enjoyed its busiest ever month in July when a record breaking 5.5 million passengers passed through its facilities.
The total was 5.2% or around 300,000 passengers up on July 2010, when it set the previous record.
The latest figures mean that Germany’s busiest gateway handled 32 million in the first seven months of 2011 – a rise of 7.8% on the corresponding period a year ago.
Elsewhere, cargo increased in July by 0.3% to 189,000 tonnes.
Dr Stefan Schulte, executive board chairman of Fraport, said: “The July traffic figures mirror present economic trends.
“In recent months, the significant economic recovery led to a noticeable rise in leisure and business travel.
“In contrast, the growth in freight tonnage has slowed, corresponding to the restrained dynamic expected in the worldwide economy.”
Aircraft movements at Frankfurt also climbed by 1.6% to 42,702 takeoffs and landings in July.
In addition, the Fraport Group’s five majority-owned airports registered a 9.3% jump in passenger traffic year-on-year to 11.43 million in July 2011.
For example, Peru’s Lima Airport recorded the strongest growth, rising by 20.4% to 1.11 million passengers. Antalya Airport in the Turkish Riviera also experienced double-digit growth of 12% year-on-year.
