Vanderlande to install new BHS at Brasília

Vanderlande Industries has been awarded the contract to install a new baggage handling system (BHS) at Presidente Juscelino Kubitschek International Airport, Brasília, in time for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

The €12m project covers the airport’s check-in and baggage reclaim areas.

Vanderlande is currently working on BHS installations at São Paulo-Guarulhos International Airport and Rio de Janeiro-Galeão International Airport.

Increasing numbers of daily flights and passenger traffic at Brasília has pushed the existing BHS to its capacity limits.

The new BHS includes 83 check-in desks and 12 transfer desks with five make-up carousels, as well as a state-of-the-art automatic sortation system.

Four flat carousels for international arriving flights and seven tilted carousels for domestic arriving flights will use friction-driven technology.

The system includes a series of conveyor belts to transport checked baggage to the make-up carousels with automatic tag readers.

Installation is in progress, with the first two flat carousels already in operation.
