Morpho has signed a five-year contract with the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service to maintain their automated border clearance system known as SmartGate.
Under the terms of the contract, Morpho will carry out a technical refresh of the gates as well as the facial matching technology, and will be responsible for their ongoing support and maintenance for the next five years.
Morpho’s SmartGate technology carries out biometric identification of eligible ePassport holders.
Passengers are identified in real-time using facial recognition technology, and that image is then compared with the digital image stored in the chip of their electronic passport.
The first installation of the system was deployed in Brisbane in 2007 and it is now available in all eight international airports across Australia - Sydney, Perth, Brisbane, Canberra, Adelaide, Darwin, Gold coast, and Melbourne.
Robyn Miller, national manager – business capability branch from Australian Customs and Border Protection Service, said: “The maintenance and enhancement of proven services such as SmartGate, provide Customs and Border Protection with necessary capability and capacity to cope with growing passenger numbers through Australian airports and to streamline the travel of legitimate passengers.”
